Hochatown, Oklahoma, is a premier wilderness destination with a rich history rooted in Choctaw heritage, a notorious reputation as a prohibition-era bootlegging hub, and widespread fame for mysterious Bigfoot sightings. This unique mix of deep-woods folklore and breathtaking scenery makes it a standout escape in the Ouachita Mountains.
The Submerged History of Old Hochatown
The roots of the community began with the Choctaw Nation, who settled along the fertile Mountain Fork River Valley in the 1830s following the Trail of Tears. By the early 1900s, the town evolved into a bustling timber hub fueled by the Choctaw Lumber and Coal Company. However, the original townsite no longer exists on land. In the 1960s, the U.S. government built a dam to manage regional flooding, completely submerging "Old Hochatown" beneath 200 feet of water to create what is now Broken Bow Lake. The community relocated to higher ground along Highway 259, paving the way for today's thriving tourism hotspot.
The Moonshine Capital of Oklahoma
Hochatown’s dense forests and remote mountain hollows provided the ultimate cover for illegal liquor production. During the 1920s and 1930s, when national prohibition collided with Oklahoma's strict state laws, an estimated 80% of local families were involved in the bootlegging trade. Relying on the exceptionally pure water of the Mountain Fork River, local distillers earned a massive reputation for high-quality white whiskey. The operation grew so large that a federal agent famously dubbed Hochatown "The Moonshine Capital of Oklahoma" during a trial. Because state prohibition wasn't repealed until 1959, the craft thrived underground for generations. Today, local craft spots like Hochatown Distilling Co. legally honor this heritage by turning family recipes into award-winning spirits.
Hunting for Bigfoot in the Ouachitas
Beyond the historic moonshine stills, Hochatown is equally famous for its legendary forest resident: Sasquatch. For decades, travelers and locals have reported unexplained sightings of a massive, 7-foot-tall hairy creature moving through the dense pine canopies of Beavers Bend State Park. Data from the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization consistently ranks McCurtain County as one of the top hotspots for sightings in the state. The community completely embraces this folklore. Visitors will find Bigfoot-themed axe throwing, local activities, and wooden Sasquatch cutouts standing guard outside luxury cabin rentals.
