Where It All Began
In the late 1800s, Choctaw families established the original Hochatown, nestled deep in what is now southeastern Oklahoma. It became a bustling sawmill village, thanks to the Choctaw Lumber and Coal Company, which helped build out the area’s infrastructure—including a rail spur to Eagletown. The community officially opened a post office in 1894, marking its growth.
As the timber industry slowed in the early 20th century, Hochatown’s reputation took a wild turn with a period known for moonshine production. The last of the original residents left by 1966, shortly before the town’s original location was flooded to make way for Broken Bow Lake. Only the town’s church and cemetery were saved, relocated to higher ground.
The Hochatown of today sits about a mile west of Broken Bow Lake and just off U.S. Route 259. In a historic move, residents voted in favor of incorporation in November 2022, with official town status granted later that same month. On January 10, 2023, town leaders held their inaugural meeting, marking the beginning of a new chapter.
Fun fact: Local supporter Vojai Reed offered space for the first town hall, and Dian Jordan was named mayor.
Located in the heart of McCurtain County, Hochatown lies 8 miles north of Broken Bow and roughly 20 miles north of Idabel. It’s surrounded by scenic gems like the Boktuklo and Cedar Mountains, with U.S. 259 serving as the town’s main road. Highway 259A leads travelers directly to the sparkling shores of Broken Bow Lake and the Mountain Fork River dam.
Yashau Creek winds through town, feeding into the Little River and eventually the Red River, adding to the area’s rich ecosystem..
Tourism is the heart of Hochatown’s economy. Hochatown has become one of Oklahoma’s top outdoor vacation spots. Thousands of visitors—especially from nearby Texas—come year-round to enjoy its mix of rustic charm and luxury getaways. The area thrives with cabin rentals, boutique shops, craft breweries, wineries, and countless outdoor experiences.
Whether it’s kayaking, zip-lining, hiking, or fine dining under the stars, Hochatown offers something for everyone. Signature attractions include:
Population: 242 residents
Density: 51.98 people per square mile (20.07/km²)
Race / Ethnicity Breakdown
Hochatown was designated a Census Designated Place (CDP) in 2020 and gained official town recognition in 2022, reflecting its rapid rise in popularity and population.
